The white, blue and red horizontal stripes are also found on the Russian or Slovenian flag. They are known as the Pan-Slavic colours.
The first codification of the national flag – at that time red-and-white (the colours of the Czech and Polish flags) – is recorded in the document Demands of the Slovak Nation of May 1848. As early as the end of August of the same year, a flag in white-blue-red colouring appears, modelled on the Russian flag. It was a remnant of a Pan-Slavist decision, when the Slavic nations adopted the white-blue-red tricolour as the Slavic colours.
The flag of the Slovak volunteers became the basis of the current Slovak state flag [...] a change in the order of the stripes: white, blue, red, which became established around 1868. After the creation of Czecho-Slovakia in 1918, the flag with three stripes was still used in Slovakia for some time, but later only the original Czech one. The white-and-red flag was supplemented with a blue triangle, which represented Slovakia.
After the extensive political and social changes connected with the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989, a three-stripe flag was again introduced for Slovakia by constitutional act in March 1990 (at that time still without the coat of arms). The current flag of the SR, displayed in the vestibule of the National Council of the SR in a ceremonial version, also bears the state coat of arms of the SR. This has been an indispensable part of the flag of Slovakia since 1991, in order to prevent confusion with the similar flags of Russia and Slovenia. The state flag in the form of the tricolour white, blue, red, with the state coat of arms of the SR on the front half, was officially confirmed by the Constitution of the SR of 1992 and was flown for the first time in front of Bratislava Castle on 03.09.1992 at 20:22.
Nad Tatrou sa blýska, hromy divo bijú. Nad Tatrou sa blýska, hromy divo bijú. Zastavme ich, bratia, veď sa ony stratia, Slováci ožijú. Zastavme ich, bratia, veď sa ony stratia, Slováci ožijú.
To Slovensko naše posiaľ tvrdo spalo. To Slovensko naše posiaľ tvrdo spalo. Ale blesky hromu vzbudzujú ho k tomu, aby sa prebralo. Ale blesky hromu vzbudzujú ho k tomu, aby sa prebralo.
