The State Flag is a rectangular cloth, with a ratio between the height and the length of the cloth of 1:2, divided vertically into three equal parts, beginning from the hoist, in the colours blue, yellow and red, and bearing in the middle of the yellow field the image of the State Coat of Arms of the Republic of Moldova, whose width constitutes 1/5 of the length of the flag.
The State Flag of the Republic of Moldova – the Tricolour – is the official symbol of the Republic of Moldova. It symbolises the past, the present and the future of the Moldovan State, reflects its democratic principles, historical tradition of the Moldovan people, equality of rights, the solidarity and friendship between all citizens of the republic.
The Romanian national tricolour blue–yellow–red, the one from which the contemporary state flags of Romania and the Republic of Moldova were born, is a creation of the 19th century, more precisely, of the Revolution of 1848.
For Bessarabia, the symbols of the Moldavian Democratic Republic of 1917–1918 are of particular interest. As regards the official state flag of the republic, this was the pan-Romanian tricolour blue–yellow–red, belonging both to the Romanians of the Old Kingdom and to those under the domination of the Habsburg Empire, and which was used at the national gatherings of Moldovans both in Chișinău and in various cities of the Russian Empire even before the proclamation of the national autonomy of Bessarabia. The tricolour established itself first as an ethnic flag, and then also as the state flag of the Moldavian Democratic Republic.
For the first time, the tricolour was again publicly hoisted in Chișinău on 19 February 1989, at the Summer Theatre, gaining ground in geometric progression.
The commission's report was presented by Alexandru Moșanu at the historic session of the Supreme Soviet of the MSSR of 27 April 1990.
At this session the Law amending Article 168 of the Constitution of the Moldavian SSR was adopted. [...] From this date until 3 November 1990, when the new State Coat of Arms was adopted, the national flag was used without the image of the coat of arms.
Limba noastră-i o comoară În adîncuri înfundată Un şirag de piatră rară Pe moşie revărsată.
Limba noastră-i foc ce arde Într-un neam, ce fără veste S-a trezit din somn de moarte Ca viteazul din poveste.
Limba noastră-i frunză verde, Zbuciumul din codrii veşnici, Nistrul lin, ce-n valuri pierde Ai luceferilor sfeşnici.
