The State Flag of the Republic of Tajikistan is a rectangular cloth on which three coloured stripes, arranged horizontally, are drawn, of which the upper stripe is red in colour and its width is equal to the lower green stripe; the white middle stripe is one and a half times the width of one of the coloured stripes. On the white stripe, from the side of the staff, in the middle of the Flag, the symbol of a stylized crown and, above it, seven stars in the form of a semicircle are depicted in gold. The ratio of the width to the overall length of the Flag is 1:2 metres.
The colours of the State Flag of Tajikistan have symbolism and ancient traditional roots. The red colour is the symbol of struggle, courage, honour and self-sacrifice on the path of the homeland, the land, the people and lofty ideas; the white colour is the symbol of a mighty spirit, purity, sacred things and happiness; the green colour is the symbol of life, youth and flourishing. The crown is the symbol of the independence and freedom of the country.
As academician Muhammad Osimi said when presenting the design of the State Flag on 24 November 1992, «the seven stars are regarded as the symbol of seven beautiful historical places of our homeland, namely Sughd, Zarafshan, Hisor, Rasht, Vakhsh, Khatlon and Badakhshan».
It should be noted that, although the Flag had acquired a worthy place in the history and culture of the Tajik nation, until the founding of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic our country did not possess an independent Flag, Emblem and national Anthem. Even until 1929, the image of the emblem and flag of the Uzbek SSR was imprinted on the most important state documents, on seals and on the official letterheads of organizations and institutions. In 1929, together with the founding of the Tajik SSR, the Central Executive Committee of the Soviets of Tajikistan adopted a resolution on the adoption and approval of 20 the Flag and State Emblem of Tajikistan, whereby for the first time Tajikistan officially came to possess a State Flag and Emblem.
Several months before the date of adoption of the State Emblem and Flag, a competition is announced, the leadership of which is undertaken by academician Muhammad Osimi. The work of the commission proceeds behind closed doors. More than 200 designs had been submitted to the competition, each of which the commission studied and assessed. Thus, the commission selects the design of the State Flag that had been submitted by the artists Zuhur Habibulloev and Aleksandr Zanevsky.
Then the first flag was adopted on 24 November 1992 at the Arbob Palace at the XVI Session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Tajikistan.
