The State Flag of the Kyrgyz Republic is made of a rectangular red cloth, in the centre of which is placed the image of a round solar disc with forty evenly radiating straight golden rays, with the image of a red tunduk of a Kyrgyz yurt placed inside the solar disc. The width of the flag is three fifths of its length.
Each element has a deep meaning:
The State Flag was adopted by the Supreme Soviet of Kyrgyzstan on 3 March 1992. On 5 March the red cloth was ceremonially raised over Government House, and at that moment it became the official sign of the new sovereign state.
The authors of the flag were E. Aidarbekov, B. Zhaichybekov, S. Iptarov, Zh. Mataev and M. Sydykov – a creative team that managed to embody the philosophy of the people in a single image.
in December 2023 the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic adopted a law on amendments to the state symbols. On 22 December it was signed by President Sadyr Japarov, and on 26 December the document was published in the newspaper “Erkin-Too”.
The main change – the rays of the sun became straight instead of wavy, and the image of the tunduk was graphically redesigned.
