One. The flag of Spain, in accordance with the provisions of Article Four of the Spanish Constitution, consists of three horizontal stripes, red, yellow and red, the yellow being twice as wide as each of the red ones.
The flag of Spain symbolises the nation; it is a sign of the sovereignty, independence, unity and integrity of the homeland and represents the higher values expressed in the Constitution.
On ascending the throne, the great organiser Charles III observed that most countries used ensigns in which the colour white predominated (Spain, France, Great Britain, Sicily, Tuscany...) and, since they were frequently at war with one another, regrettable confusions occurred at sea, [...] for this reason, he instructed his Minister of the Navy to present him with several models of flags, with the sole condition that they be visible at great distances. The Minister called a competition, selecting twelve sketches from those submitted, which he showed to the King. The Sovereign chose two of them, in which he altered the dimensions of the stripes, declaring them regulation, the first for the Navy and the second for the Merchant Navy.
By Royal Decree of 28 May 1785, he ordered:
"In order to avoid the drawbacks and harm which, as experience has shown, may be caused by the National Flag used by my Navy and other Spanish vessels, being mistaken at long distances or in calm winds for those of other nations, I have resolved that henceforth my warships shall use a Flag divided lengthwise into three stripes, of which the upper and the lower shall be red and each of a width of one quarter of the whole, and the middle one yellow,
Under the reign of Isabella II the use of the Bicolour Flag was extended to the Army, thus proceeding to unify the Spanish flag. By Royal Decree of 13 October 1843 the replacement of all the ensigns of the Army by new red-and-yellow ones was ordered,
On 14 April 1931 the Monarchy was overthrown and the Second Republic proclaimed, and from the very first moment tricolour flags, red, yellow and purple, were already to be seen, symbolising the new regime, instead of the previous red-and-yellow flag, then considered monarchist.
Finally, and following the restoration of the House of Bourbon to the Spanish Throne, in the person of H.M. Juan Carlos I, the Spanish Constitution was published in 1978, whose Article 4, in its paragraph 1, states:
"The Flag of Spain consists of three horizontal stripes, red, yellow and red, the yellow being twice as wide as each of the red ones".
The anthem is officially without lyrics.
