The flag of the Principality of Andorra has traditionally been formed of three similar consecutive vertical stripes: the first, next to the pole, is blue in colour, the second, in the middle, is yellow in colour, and the third red in colour.
The coat of arms of the Principality of Andorra is placed in the centre of the flag, on the yellow stripe
In the press we are told that the Andorran flag would have three colours with different meanings: blue in honour of France, red for Spain and yellow for "the republic" [...] We do not have official documents in which we are told of the reasons for this choice of colours
we know that the proposal arose on Tuesday 11 December 1866, a date that we can mark as that of the creation of the country's national flag. And the main protagonist, together with Napoleon III, was the Syndic General Guillem d'Areny-Plandolit (1822-1876), Baron of Senaller and Gramenet.
since it was created in 1866, until well into the 20th century different models of the Andorran flag were used in Andorra which shared only the colours: red, blue and yellow were non-negotiable; however, their order and orientation, as well as whether the coat of arms was included on the flag, were variable.
It seems that it was not until 1930 that the tricolour flag with vertical stripes and with the coat of arms embroidered on the central stripe, the yellow one, definitively gains ground over other Andorran flags.
But more important and significant was the resolution that the General Council led by the Syndic Francesc Cairat i Freixes (1880-1968) adopted regarding the flag on 22 December 1942: [...] The official flag is of three colours, in vertical direction: blue, yellow and red, of the same dimensions with the blue attached to the pole.
With the approval of the Andorran Constitution in 1993, the official status of the three state signs of Andorra was confirmed through its Article 2.2: “the national anthem, the flag and the coat of arms of Andorra are the traditional ones”. A rather generic article that had to be expanded by the Law on the use of state signs, of 20 June 1996, which required the preparation of a “book of graphic standards” for the use and reproduction of the Andorran state symbols. It was then that it was specified, with complete exactness, how the only official Andorran state signs had to be -and are-: the coat of arms, the flag and the anthem of Andorra.
