The flag of the Republic of Slovenia is a tricolour, a white-blue-red flag. The colours run in this order from top to bottom, each colour occupying one third of the flag's area in width. The state coat of arms is added.
The coat of arms is in the upper left part of the flag, so that it extends with one half into the white field and with the other into the blue.
The coat of arms, the flag and the anthem of the Republic of Slovenia (hereinafter: the coat of arms, the flag and the anthem) denote affiliation with the Republic of Slovenia.
The Slovenian national flag became established as a symbol of national consciousness as early as the 19th century. We Slovenes determined the colours (white, blue and red) on the basis of the colours of the coat of arms of the Duchy of Carniola and proposed them for approval to the then Austrian government in Vienna, where the colours were approved. The first to hoist the Slovenian national flag were Slovenian students in Vienna in March 1848, at the time of revolutionary ferment.
On Slovenian Flag Day we commemorate 7 April 1848, when the Slovenian patriotic student Lovro Toman, with like-minded companions, first hoisted the Slovenian tricolour at Wolfova Street 8 in Ljubljana.
In the Kingdom of Yugoslavia the national flag was prohibited from 1929; during the Second World War both the national liberation side and the counter-revolutionary side of the Slovenian nation fought under it. After the Second World War it became the basis for the republic's flag within the Yugoslavia of that time, combined with a red star.
At independence in 1991, the project for selecting the state flag took into account and incorporated the historically grounded national white-blue-red flag. The coat of arms of Slovenia was added to it, and it was adopted on 25 June 1991 by the decree promulgating Amendment C to the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia.
The flag of the Republic of Slovenia was first hoisted at the celebration of the declaration of independence on 26 June 1991 on Republic Square in Ljubljana.
Žive naj vsi narodi ki hrepene dočakat’ dan, da koder sonce hodi, prepir iz sveta bo pregnan, da rojak prost bo vsak, ne vrag, le sosed bo mejak!
