The flag of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria consists of a green and white rectangle bearing a red star and crescent. [...] The length of the rectangle is equal to one and a half times its width (height of the flag).
This rectangle is divided along the short median into two halves. The green half is placed on the inside, against the staff.
The white half is placed on the outside.
The star has five points. [...] The centre of the outer circle of the crescent is at the centre of the rectangle.
The flag is the symbol of national sovereignty.
«The birth of the Algerian flag, it must be repeated, was not the result of a decision by a political leader. It was the imperative of the struggle that drove the North African Star to make this flag in order to give concrete form to the project of independence» [...] it is a blend of the banner of Emir Abdelkader (green and white), that of Ahmed Bey (red and white) and the other struggles of Algerians for independence since the colonisation of the country in 1830, as well as the symbol of the ENA (the crescent and the star), accompanied by a verse of the Holy Quran advocating unity.
Flags different from today's, and whose draft was adopted by the North African Star (ENA) in 1934, with its three colours, green, white and red, as well as the star and the crescent in the middle.
And it was Messali Hadj who entrusted the making of the national banner to his wife, Émilie.
It was the banner of the May 1945 demonstrations that became the official flag of the National Liberation Front, the National Liberation Army and the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic.
After the Évian Accords, the Provisional Government (GPRA) officially adopted this flag, which was hung on 3 July 1962 at Sidi Fredj, then on 5 July at all the administrations of the country, before it was raised on 9 October of the same year at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York.
On 25 April 1963, the President of the Republic at the time, Ahmed Ben Bella, signed Law 63-145 «on the definition of the characteristics of the Algerian national emblem», which sets out the technical characteristics of the Algerian flag, the one that was dreamed of under French colonialism and that we know today.
