In accordance with Federal Law No. 2/2 of 1971, as amended by Federal Decree-Law No. 13/2 of 2019, the flag of the United Arab Emirates shall be rectangular, its width twice its height, and it shall be divided into four rectangular sections. The first section is red in colour and forms the end of the flag near the flagpole; its height is equal to the height of the flag and its width is equal to one quarter of the width of the flag. The other three sections form the remainder of the flag and are horizontal, equal and parallel; the uppermost of them is green, the middle one white and the lowest black.
The colour white symbolises doing good and giving, and the State's approach in support of peace and security in the world.
The colour green symbolises growth, prosperity and the green environment, and the cultural and civilisational renaissance in the State.
The colour black symbolises the strength of the State's citizens, their invulnerability and their resolve, and the rejection of injustice and extremism.
The colour red symbolises the contributions of the generation that founded the Union, and the sacrifices of the nation's martyrs to protect its achievements and gains.
The flag of the United Arab Emirates was raised for the first time on 2 December 1971 by the late founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may he rest in peace) during the celebrations of the UAE National Day for the establishment of the union.
The flag was designed by His Excellency Abdullah Al Maeena who participated in a competition held by Al-Ittihad newspaper in late 1971 to design the flag of the United Arab Emirates. The colors of the flag (red, green, white and black) were inspired from an old verse of Safi al-Din al-Hilli's poem.
"White are our acts,
green our fields,
black our battles,
and red our swords"
