It is made up of three vertical stripes of the same width: two of sky blue colour at the ends and a white one in the centre.
Its shape consists of a rectangle whose vertical and horizontal proportions correspond to the ratio of 5 to 8
The sky blue shade recalls that the country lies between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. It also symbolises strength, the Guatemalan skies, justice, loyalty and the gentleness of the country. White is purity, faith, respect, obedience, integrity and peace of the Nation.
After signing the Act of Independence, on 15 September 1821, and joining, in 1823, the Central American Federation, the first flag was born. Estuardo Ovalle, chronicler and historian of the Military History service of the Museum of the Army of Guatemala, explains that it had three horizontal stripes: two blue ones, which represented the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and a white one, for the Central American territory.
In 1851, Carrera asks for a new design. Aníbal Chajón, researcher at the Centre for Folklore Studies of the University of San Carlos, states that a yellow segment and a red one were added, which recalled “the link with Spain and with the Catholic Church, and the conservative ideology of the ruler”.
In 1871, while provisional president of the Republic of Guatemala, General Miguel García Granados decreed its creation and determined that it should have the colours sky blue and white.
In 1968, President Julio César Méndez Montenegro established the colour and design that we see today. The sky blue was proposed by the painter Víctor Manuel Aragón, whose exercise consisted of observing the sky at different hours, until finding the shade that paints our country.
