The National Flag of Honduras consists of three horizontal stripes, the two outer ones turquoise blue and the middle stripe white, adorned with five turquoise blue stars.
The five stars represent the union and fraternity among the
Central American homelands, the white colour symbolises peace and the turquoise blue the national sky.
The antecedents of the Honduran flag are found in the flag used by the United Provinces of Central America, made up of the States of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The creator of the flag was the Salvadoran Manuel José Arce (1787-1847), who took part in the independence uprisings from 1811; the colours were his suggestion and the influence lay in the flag of Argentina, which flew along the Central American coasts on the ships of the privateers who encouraged the independence spirit of the isthmus
Arce's flag was used from 1822 as an emblem of liberty. Those who made it were his wife, Doña Felipa Aranzamendi, and his sister Antonia Manuela, for the use of the Salvadoran troops (Ferro, 1968). When the Independence of the United Provinces of Central America was declared, on 1 July 1823, the flag continued to be used: it was made up of three horizontal stripes of the same size, two turquoise and the one in the centre white.
The Federal Republic of Central America was dissolved in 1838. The influence of the flag remained present in the flags of the five Central American nations, in the use of the colours white and turquoise or blue and in the arrangement of the stripes. In the case of the Honduran standard, the ideal of Central American unity was maintained with the five stars. The official declaration of the National Flag of Honduras was established in February 1866, by means of Legislative Decree No. 7, which contains the following provisions:
