The national flag of Greece consists of nine horizontal stripes of equal width – five blue and four white, which alternate. The upper hoist-side corner contains a blue canton that stretches along the first five stripes and contains a white cross.
Blue and white are the national colours
of Greece, as blue symbolizes the sky and seas and white denotes the
purity of the Greek independence struggle. The cross represents the
Christian religion. The nine blue-and-white horizontal stripes of the
flag stand for the nine syllables of the Greek motto Eleftheria i
Thanatos (Greek for Freedom or Death).
The first land flag was square in shape, with a white cross on a blue background. The marine flags resembled the current national flag more closely, the only difference for merchant marine flags being the reversal of colors in the corner containing the cross. The flag of the merchant ships was eventually merged with that of the navy in 1828, as a recognition for their participation in the Greek War of Independence.
The national flag has been modified several times without being radically altered, mostly as a result of regime changes. In 1833, the Bavarian coat of arms was added to the flags of the army and the navy, and remained until the overthrow of King Otto in October of 1862. With the arrival of King George I in 1863, the crown was introduced into the flags and remained there until the regime change in 1924.

As an exception, the duration of the full military service is 9 instead of 12 months if conscripts, after the initial training, serve the entire remaining time in certain areas of the eastern borders, in Cyprus, or in certain military units. In July 2025, the Greek Government unveiled several defense reforms which went into effect on 1 January 2026, including abolishing mandatory military service for the Air Force and Navy, with exceptions only for specialized roles such as aircraft engineers and ship captains; all conscripts are to be classified exclusively into the Army; ground forces will also take over facility security duties previously managed by the other branches. As of 2025, women comprised about 17% of the military's full-time personnel.
