The national emblem is the tricolour flag, green, yellow, red.
Rectangular in shape, it is composed of two right-angled triangles of green and red colour, separated by a yellow band running diagonally, the green being on the side of the hoist.
The green is the symbol of hope in the economic and social future of the country.
The yellow is the symbol of the will for union and of the traditional sense of the legendary hospitality of the Congo.
The red expresses the dearest wish: that the courage and the ardour of the Congolese people may enable it to win its place among the civilised nations of the world.
The flag of the Republic of the Congo, composed of green, yellow and red, was approved on 18 August 1959 by a constituent assembly. It was adopted as the official flag on 15 September 1959 and did not change after independence.
However, in 1970 until the early 1990s, a red flag was used because of the socialist orientation of the country. After the transition to a multi-party political system and the market economy in the early 1990s, the newly installed regime returned on 10 June 1991 to the flag of the early days.
