The National Flag is equal at the hoist to two thirds of its fly and is made up of the colours turquí blue, white and red, combined in the following way: it is divided into two horizontal stripes of equal width, the lower stripe is red and the upper one turquí blue in the third part next to the hoist and white in the remaining two thirds of its fly, with a white five-pointed star in the middle of the blue square.
The current flag was originally conceived by José Ignacio Zenteno, Minister of War during the administration of Bernardo O'Higgins. Most probably it was designed by the Spanish soldier Antonio Arcos, although some historians maintain that it was Gregorio de Andía y Varela who designed it.
It was legalised by the Decree-Law of 18 October 1817. This was the flag that was used publicly for the first time, on 12 February 1818, at the proclamation of Independence.
Nevertheless, in 1854 the proportion between the three colours was fixed, and in 1912 the size and diameter of the star were defined.
The current flag was officially adopted by Supreme Decree No. 1534 of the Ministry of the Interior
