the flag and the official coat of arms of the Republic are identified through the precise literal and graphic definition of these distinctive signs, emblems of sovereignty and statehood.
An archival document of 4 September 1465 gives information about a flag or banner made up of three vertical bands, yellow and crimson on the two sides and a white band in the centre.
It is not known when the white and light blue flag that we know today was adopted but, historians tell us, this certainly happened before 1797, the date on which, following the wave of reforms that followed the French Revolution, a white and light blue cockade was ordered by the Prince and Sovereign Council, a cockade which in France was indeed used as a badge of the revolutionaries.
In San Marino, in fact, the characteristics of the flag and of the coat of arms have never had a precise description in a legislative provision, nor have they been incorporated in graphic form in ordinary, qualified or constitutional laws.
The anthem is officially without lyrics.
