The national flag consists of a width of cloth in the proportions of 5 to 3 or of 2 to 1, bearing three equal stripes of the colours red, white, blue arranged horizontally.
To distinguish the flag of Luxembourg from that of the Netherlands, a pragmatic solution was adopted: whereas the Dutch blue is an ultramarine blue, that of the Grand Duchy is a sky blue
The first known flag is borne by Count William of Luxembourg in 1123. It was barry, that is, striped horizontally, probably yellow and red.
Whereas the Luxembourg coat of arms and flag enjoyed legal protection as early as 1972,
The Law of 27 July 1993 empowers the Grand Duke to determine the precise colour composition of the national flag.
